What will appear on a DBS check?
The information that will be revealed by these checks will to an extent depend on the type of check that is carried out; in addition, for those individuals who have received convictions or cautions, whether this information is revealed by a check will depend on the length of time that has passed since and/or whether the conviction or caution is protected.
Protected convictions and cautions
There are certain protected convictions or cautions that are filtered and therefore do not appear on the DBS check; however, certain convictions will always appear on a check – over 1,000 offences will always be disclosed. The most common types are:
– Certain sexual offences.
– Violent offences.
– Offences relating to the supply of drugs.
– Safeguarding offences.
Cautions
Offences not on the above list will be protected and will not appear on your DBS certificate if you received a caution for the offence when you were under the age of 18 and the caution was over two years ago, or if you received a caution for the offence whilst over 18 and over six years have passed since the caution date.
Convictions
If you have received a conviction for one of the offences listed, or were convicted and subsequently received a custodial sentence, these offences will always appear on your DBS certificate. If you have been convicted for more than one offence, all your convictions will be revealed by the check.
If you have only received one conviction and a non-custodial sentence, the conviction will not be disclosed if it was imposed when you were under 18 and five and a half years have passed, or if you were over 18 when it was imposed and 11 years have passed since you were convicted.

A standard check will reveal all convictions, cautions, reprimands and final warnings, save for the protected cautions and convictions. An enhanced check will also reveal any information that is held on local police records that is considered relevant. Enhanced checks may also include a check of the Disclosure and Barring Service, which will reveal whether an individual has been barred from working with vulnerable adults or children.
